RAIN AND VEGETABLE GARDEN: I think we have had rain for about 50% of the days thus far in July. No wonder our rather shady vegetable garden isn’t doing much growth-wise. I was so excited at the beginning of the summer thinking that it would be a great growing year (we’ve got black plastic down to keep the plants warm), but I am sorely disappointed. Our bush bean plants are just beginning to put blossoms on, while our pole bean plants are struggling to grasp hold of the fencing and are only about 6 inches tall. Only about 1/3 of the cucumber seeds I planted even sprouted, and I had to replant half the broccoli seeds. The tomato plants are doing well and we should have lots of cherry tomatoes (if the sun would shine a bit more so bee activity would increase). The zucchini plants seem to be growing at a good pace, although they will need a few more weeks to gain sufficient size before putting on some blossoms. One of our neighbors has already given us their first zucchini and our next door neighbor has huge tomatoes. I envy their sunny garden plots, but we are unwilling to take down trees to accommodate a garden.
