HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER: We have two hummingbird feeders in our yard. Drew fills the feeders 12 hours apart so there is always fresh sugar water to drink. He uses a mix of 4 parts water to 1 part sugar (he boils the water and stirs in the sugar until the solution is clear, with the sugar completely dissolved; then he cools it and refrigerates it). Drew does not put any food coloring in the water as he feels that the birds do not need anything artificial to be ingested into their bodies. As long as you have some red on your feeder, the food coloring is not necessary and the birds will thoroughly enjoy their food. He only puts a small amount of sugar water in each feeder (enough to last 36 hours) so the water stays fresh. During the cooler temps. of springtime, he allows the sugar water to go a few days between fresh fills.
