Flower Garden Update: Yellow irises have been in bloom since last week. The purple irises should open in a few days, as should the false indigo (baptista). The day lilies have flower stalks, but won’t open for several weeks. The peony plants both have flower buds, and the red weigela has its first blooms. The chives and dame’s rocket (a type of phlox) are both in bloom. The dame’s rocket attracts swallowtail butterflies. I am hoping to get some photos this weekend.
Vegetable Garden Update: The first bush beans that were planted on June 1st are now popping up through the soil. It is a disappointing year, garden-wise. Most of the bean shoots are getting eaten by slugs before they really leaf out. Only a handful of the cucumber plants have germinated. Ugh…
Trees and shrubs: The maple trees are dropping their seeds. These whirly-gigs have been fluttering in the wind in great numbers. It is rather magical to be outside as they twirl around toward the ground. The blackberry plants are in bloom with gorgeous white flowers, and the berries should be ready for consumption in late August.
