AUTUMN UPDATE: Since we haven’t posted in 5 days, I thought I’d do an update on the happenings around Maine. The southern portion of Maine has hit peak leaf color which should last another week. Around Caesar Pond, the first leaves to turn brown are those of the mighty oak, followed by choke cherry and what I believe to be alder. The Black locust have mostly lost their leaves, and the beech and oak are still retaining theirs. Our maple trees have completely dropped their leaves and Drew is busy raking on a daily basis. It is looking rather barren around here, but the benefit is that there are so many bare trees that we have a much better view of the pond for the winter season to come.
TICKS: Tick season is in full swing and we are finding a multitude of ticks on Kasha. Okay, maybe I exaggerate a wee bit, but just this week we have taken a deer tick and a dog tick off of Kasha. Autumn is a time we humans also have to be careful as the deer ticks, aka black-legged ticks, are out in abundance, and they are the ones to carry Lyme disease. These are just about the only insect that gives me the willies. Lyme disease is on the rise, and we sure don’t want to succumb to it. I personally know several people with Lyme disease and it can be quite debilitating.
