Rhode Island Red: I am chicken sitting for a few days. There are currently 8 Rhode Island Red hens in the chicken coop, and I hope there are the same number of chickens there when my neighbors arrive home on Tuesday. You know, I think that everyone should chicken sit at least once in their lives to gain a true appreciation for where eggs and chicken meat come from. I’ve mucked out the coop, changed out the nesting material, and watered the chickens.
This morning I went to collect the eggs (7) and fill the water bucket. The chickens got out of the coop and I gave them a half hearted chase to try to get them back in the coop, but they are rather wiley, so they are outdoors for the day. I’m nervous as a mother hen…I went and checked on them at 10am, and they were happily ensconced in the vegetable garden. Then, they moved to the cool forest for a dirt bath, and that is where I left them. They will enter the coop at dark, whereupon I will count them again. Cross your fingers that they don’t wander far from home today…
