Milkweed Patch Walk: We finally made it to the milkweed patch only to find that there were very few milkweeds still in bloom, and no monarch butterflies to be seen. In fact there wasn’t much of anything flying around, except for the yellowjackets that I inadvertently disturbed when I dropped the tripod into a soft mound of grasses next to their nest. We ran in different directions and had to stand still for about 10 minutes as we waited for the yellow jackets to calm down. I was then able to creep up quietly and retrieve our two camera cases from near the nest. My Swedish beekeeper friend, Uncle Eric, would have been proud of my stealthy bee prowess.
