Weather Update: Yesterday was the first day that the feeling of Autumn was truly in the air. The temp. was in the mid-60s with humidity in the low 50s. The angle of the sun is changing and the evening light is different, becoming more pearly than uber bright in the afternoon. I actually had to wear jeans and a sweatshirt when working in the garden.
Garden Update: I pulled up the tomato plants...
Relaxation Photography: So, what do I like to do after an especially grueling day at work? Hmm…how about photographing vegetables! I love to eat!
Hummingbird Moth: I saw a hummingbird moth on the bee balm in the back yard. By the time I was able to get outside with the camera, it had vanished. I looked for it all around the yard, but was unable to find it. I’ve only ever seen one once before, about 5 years ago. I remember seeing it around the phlox, so it must have been late August then, as well.
A Weather Alert: We are in a heat wave with the temp. expected to get up to 90F tomorrow! It is currently 85F outdoors, and 85F indoors. Ouch!
UNHEALTHY LEVELS OF OZONE WERE EXPECTED IN SAGADAHOC COUNTY AND THE COASTAL PORTIONS OF YORK AND CUMBERLAND COUNTIES AND THE HIGH ELEVATIONS OF ACADIA THROUGH THIS EVENING.

Chickens Video: Scratch the ground, back up, peck at the soil, munch lunch, repeat…Turn up your speaker volume to hear next door neighbor rooster, Roy, calling to his lady friends!
Hummingbird Video: While I was tending to the chickens, I saw three hummingbirds becoming territorial over the tall sunflower plants. I never realized that hummers liked to sip nectar from sunflowers until I saw these females fluttering about. I was able to catch one on video.
Pond Paddle: This morning was hot and sunny, so I decided to go onto the pond for a paddle from 9am - 11:30am. It was hotter than I usually like for paddling, and I have to be very careful not to get overheated, but I can see some birds at this time of the morning more frequently than if I were to go out at dawn. I got lucky to see a pair of cormorants swimming, diving, and sunning themselves.
Milkweed Patch Walk: We finally made it to the milkweed patch only to find that there were very few milkweeds still in bloom, and no monarch butterflies to be seen. In fact there wasn’t much of anything flying around, except for the yellowjackets that I inadvertently disturbed when I dropped the tripod into a soft mound of grasses next to their nest. We ran in different directions and had to...
Garden Photos: I took a few photos of garden flowers and insects today as it was a gorgeous, warm and sunshiny day. There was a light breeze which kept us so comfortable. It really is beginning to feel like autumn.
Walk in the woods: Well…when it isn’t raining, I think Maine is one of the prettiest states in the great USA. The temp. was 73F, the humidity was 55%., and the sun was shining. WOW! I covered up with DEET, put on my headnet, strapped on my fanny pack, grabbed my walking sticks, and took off down the snowmobile trail. Our woods are rather wet down to the first creek, but beyond that it...
