Animals: Drew saw a porcuine in the middle of the trail last week. He was able to get quite close to it before it retreated and climbed a tree. He also saw a smallish sized snapping turtle crossing a road on his way home from dropping me off at school one morning last week. And, this evening he saw a young red squirrel trying to snag a drink from it’s mother.

Weather Update: The last few days have been cold and rainy, with daytime temps in the mid-50s, and a nightime time dipping down into the 30s. Brrrrr…..Oh, my aching bones…It is so soggy out, although the rain should stop early Saturday morning, which it a good thing as I am going to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay (with neighbor Carla), on Saturday. They are having a...

Woodsy Walk: We took a nice family walk in the woods this afternoon. The blackfly season is almost over, and the mosquitoes are out in full force. We had to wear our headnets for much of the walk.

Gardening: I planted the winter density lettuce (a variety of romaine lettuce from PineTree Garden Seeds) in a pot on the front deck. I also transplanted a few plants from one garden to another. Nice day…the temp. got up to a broiling 66F, and at 5:20 pm it is now down to 59F. Ahhh… By the way, Pinetree Garden Seeds is an awesome local company in New Gloucester, Maine.

Mosquitoes have arrived: ‘Tis the crossover season of blackflies and mosquitoes…For the  next several weeks we will battle both species of insects as we plant our gardens, go for walks and paddles on the pond. Itch, itch, itch…..The mosquitoes are as ravenous as the blackflies, and I came inside this afternoon with quite a few blackflies plastered to my socks, on my headnet, on...

Weather: It is a scorcher outside today with a high temperature of 88F. Ouch! We are not used to this heat. Luckily, tomorrow’s high temp. is supposed to be 79F, and then we are back down in the 60s for the weekend and next week. Ahhh……

Sapsucker Mating: Drew glimpsed a pair of sapsuckers mating in a tree next to our shed. Unfortunately, by the time I grabbed the camera, they had fallen off the branch and the female had flown away. We are hoping that they will create a nest hole nearby and raise some cute little chicks!

Blackflies: Yowzer! Those darned insects can bite. I just spent an hour outdoors doing some flower photography and beheading my daffodils, and am now paying for all that fun. ITCHYYYYYYYYY……. I had to put my head net on, but my neck still got covered with bites, as did every other part of me that was exposed to the elements.  Ooohhh…itch….itch…itch…  I really...
