Winter Wrap-Up: We got 87 inches of snow over the course of the winter of 2008-2009. The snow is rapidly melting with the daytime temps. consistently above freezing, as are many of the nighttime temps. The exposed ground is revealing all the spring cleanup we will have to begin as soon as the ground firms up. There are lots of tree limbs scattered all over the yard, more so than usual as we had...
Seed Pots: All the tomato seeds have sprouted in my bathtub greenhouse. The pepper seeds are lagging behind, but should sprout by the end of next week. Yipppeee!
Happy Spring!
In the Northern Hemisphere spring officially begins at 7:44 a.m. ET today. It is the vernal equinox, or spring equinox. Read all about it on this National Geographic page.
Wistful thought as we near the Spring Equinox: I look forward to not having to wear a hat and neck warmer to stay warm in the house…The cold indoor temperatures are getting old…I am now, officially, looking forward to summer.
Mink: We went for a nice walk in the woods this afternoon and scared up a mink at the first creek. The mink scampered away down the frozen ice to the south of the trail. This is the first mink we’ve seen in a few years. Unfortunately, she didn’t pose for pictures. but she did leave behind quite a powerful musky odor.
Vegetable Seeds: Yesterday evening, I planted a couple of varieties of cherry tomato seeds, some bell pepper seeds, and some perennial button flower seeds. The seed trays are now sitting in our downstairs bathtub which will serve as our “greenhouse”. We have a fluorescent light set up in the shower stall which we will turn on when the seeds germinate in 7-14 days. The downstairs...
Daylight Saving Time: I do not know the reasoning behind why we still have Daylight Saving Time, but I do know that I am so tired this week. I bemoaned the fact that we had to “Spring Ahead”, and could not find anything positive about it until I witnessed a gorgeous sunrise Monday morning. That made this ridiculous mandate a bit more acceptable. Now, I am excited to get up early (NOT)...
Slide Show: Popham Beach Erosion
Warming Up: The temperature is climbing. We will be in the mid-40’s by the weekend. We are going to attempt to go to the beach on Saturday. But, before then we will have to brave yet more snow, freezing rain, and just plain rain with the front that is moving in tonight through Friday.
Weather: The low temp. this morning was 1.4F. Cold, cold, cold… Drew put the pink foam panels back up on Sunday afternoon in anticipation of this cold snap.
Snow Total Thus Far: 87 inches of snow.
Snow from this storm: 9 inches of powdery snow. The temp. is 19F at 11:30 am, with winds gusting from 15mph - 20 mph.
Winter Wonderland: It is a winter wonderland outside…Oh, wait…it was already like that, so now it is a winter wonder wonderland outside. More snow! AND more cold…The days will be in the low to mid-20s this week, and the...
More Snow Ahead: It is currently 6am Sunday morning, and we are in range to get between 10-14 inches of snow tonight through Monday evening. Wow!!!! Batten Down the Hatches! The low pressure system is currently over the Carolina’s and will slam into us later as it pulls moisture off the Gulf of Maine.
