Maine Nature Poetry: I have been audio recording my poetry and reflections to accompany my written entries on MaineNaturePoetry. You can link to it from the “Links” section of the side bar to the right on this page. Enjoy! (P.S. My favorite poem is “Ode to a Good Dog” April 2005. It is dedicated to our wonderful German Shorthaired Pointer, Kasha…)

Snow Total Thus Far: 78 inches Snow from this storm: 15 inches. Power: We just got our power back after being off for 60 hours. We are so spoiled in that we have a generator that we ran, on and off, for about 8 hours a day. Ahhh….creature comforts… See our MND Family Blog for more picts. from this storm.

Snow Total Thus Far: 63 inches. More Snow: We got 2 inches of fluffy snow overnight, and another inch of super fluffy snowflakes this afternoon. Drew took the pink panels down three days ago because the night time temps. have been a bit warmer, but it looks like the panels will go back up on Sunday as we are going into another cold spell with single digit overnight temps.

Hairy Woodpecker: Sighted on recent walk along the snowmobile trail. Here is a bit of trivia about a woodpecker’s brain from http://www.funtrivia.com: How do woodpeckers avoid brain damage? Recent research using high-speed films of acorn woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus) shows that their heads can endure up to 1200 gravities of force when the beak hits the wood. Despite this...

Weather and Snowpack: We’ve had spring-like temps this week with Wednesday getting up to 45F. Unfortunately, this makes the snow uneven and each step on the trail leads to a loud exclamation of “Umphhhhh”, as the snow gives way under our footsteps. Chiropractors must be very busy this season.

Weather: The sun was in and out of the clouds all day. We ended up walking on the pond instead of going to the beach. Whoo, it was cold on the pond with the wind blowing at a steady rate of about 15mph. Even though the temp. was about 31F, we were rather chilled…of course, it didn’t help that part of our walk was on a snowmobile trail that had us up to mid-calf in slush. We got soaked!...

Walk in the woods: We braved the cold and went for a one mile walk in the woods this afternoon. The temp. was 13F when we left, and 11F upon our return. We saw eastern cottontail rabbit tracks everywhere! We also saw several trails of what might be mink tracks. Hmmm…we didn’t see any signs that the bunnies were brunch for anyone, though! I did not bring the camera on this walk due to...

Weather: Today’s low temp. is 0F and the high is going to be 15F. Tomorrow’s low temp. will be in the negative numbers. Brrrrr…..but the upshot of this cold snap is that this might just be the last of the super duper cold temps. I think we’ll go to the beach this weekend. Yippeeee…Why, you say? Well…..the high temp. for Saturday is supposed to be 35F and the...
