Nature Update: What a difference a few days makes. We went on vacation and came home to red maples, daffodils, magnolia, forsythia, and bloodroot all in bloom. We saw a pair of Cooper’s hawks flying overhead, and many tree branches are beginning to sprout tender green leaves.
Bird Update: The Cooper’s Hawk is back for the season and was flying overhead this morning. What a gorgeous sight. I also saw a hairy woodpecker (I think) beginning to excavate a nest hole (I hope) in an old birch tree in the back yard. I am going to set up the video camera later this week, and let it run for an hour to get some footage. I also saw what I think are 2 pairs of bufflehead...
A Fine Summery Day: Today’s temperature topped out at 75.6F. WOW! We were decked out in shorts and tee shirts today. Kasha was panting away and hugging the shady spots. She took every opportunity to lounge upon the last vestiges of snow around the yard.
Pond Ice Update: The ice has disappeared from over half the pond surface. We may just have ice-out tomorrow. Boo Hoo…and me without a seat in the kayak. The replacement part should arrive next Tuesday. Hmmm..what am I to do till then…Oh, I know…go on a vacation to Bar Harbor! Jeepers Peepers: We have one lone peeper peeping away at the pond. He was out on a little island about...
Bird Update: I heard a phoebe chirping away this morning. Bird species are beginning to arrive one by one. Snow Update: We only have a few piles of snow left in the yard. This week’s weather is warm and sunny, so the yard is slowly drying up. Trail Update: The snowmobile trail is getting more treacherous to walk along. One must step carefully so as not to drop a foot or two down through...
Yet Another Bird Update: Drew saw one purple finch at the feeder today. And, I heard a pileated woodpecker tapping away on a tree this morning.
Bird Update: Two goldfinches showed up today, and Drew is going to buy some thistle for them tomorrow. They have arrived 8 weeks later than usual. Even the chickadee numbers are slowly increasing, and we usually hear a lot more pileated woodpecker activity by now. Strange… But, the Canada geese have been doing fly-overs of the pond for the last couple of weeks in search of open water. Pond...
SPRING TIME TEMPS HAVE ARRIVED: Our days are now in the high 30’s to 50F, and our nights are above freezing. The northern edge of our back yard has a small strip of grass showing, and the shoots of our first daffodils are poking up through the soil in that location. We still have snow several feet deep in the front yard, but that is slowly melting. Ahh…Spring Has Sprung at last.
