COLD DAY: Today does not feel like spring has arrived as we have a high of 28F with winds gusting to 30 mph. There is a lot of blowing snow across the pond, and the warmth just gets sucked out of us with the wind chill at 15F. BIRDS: On the bright side, I saw 4 black-capped chickadees and a tufted titmouse at the bird feeder today. It was nice to finally hear some bird chatter after all these...
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 126.5 inches. SNOW: We got 4.5 inches of wet, heavy snow today.
HAPPY SPRING: It is 27F with a 31mph wind, making a wind chill/feel like temperature of about 13F. Brrrrrr………Sand is flying, powerlines and trees are swaying…and no, the daffodils are not blooming yet as they are still covered by several feet of snow. BUT…Dairy Queen opened in Topsham today, and that is a sure sign that spring has sprung. AND…if that is not...
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 122 inches SNOW: We got 2 inches of snow toward midnight last night. Today, we have a nice rainy day in the mid-30’s. Welcome to Spring;-)
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 120 inches. SNOW: We are in the midst of a small snow storm today and have received 2 inches of heavy, wet snow as the daytime temp. approaches 33F.
FROST HEAVES: The roads are in the worst shape we’ve ever seen,or felt. There are brilliant orange “Frost Heave” signs decorating the roadways, seemingly every 50 feet on our travels. Pot holes are starting to swallow up the roads as well. This unusually warm winter has wreaked havoc on asphalt…As Drew says, “Where are the hover cars when you need them? “
BIRD UPDATE: Drew saw 2 chickadees and 2 tufted titmice today. The arrival of the finches is now one month overdue.
SAND COLLECTING: I have just become a member of the International Sand Collectors Society, and I am extremely excited. I have gotten lots ideas for my small collection. I plan on beginning to photograph my collection over spring break. Check out my new sand collection blog at http://lhaines-sand.blogspot.com If you travel throughout Maine, or anywhere else in the world, please think of me and...
SIGN OF SPRING?: I saw a crow carrying a tiny piece of a branch while flying into the woods, on Wednesday. Hmmm..maybe he knows something we don’t know…like spring is just around the corner…But, then again… there is still no sign of goldfinches or purple finches, or even of woodpeckers and chickadees, all of whom usually arrive at our feeder by around Feb. 15th.
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 118 inches SCHOOL SNOW DAY # 8: We received one inch of snow and sleet this morning. We also have some icing on the roads today. So…it is good day to grade papers and rest. Actually, I think a day with schools closed is fortuitous as the dreaded flu is running rampant through faculty, staff, and students.
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 117 inches OH NO…MORE SNOW;-) We got 6.5 inches of heavy wet snow today.
