Cold Wave: Ooh…we are in a deep freeze…we didn’t get the snow that was predicted, but we sure do have the cold temperatures. At 9pm, the temperature is 5.6F with winds gusting between 20 to 36mph. That gives us wind chills between -15F to -21F. Wicked cold…I feel so bad for Kasha who has to go potty outdoors. We put a neck warmer and her blue “super suit” (she...

Heat Wave Continues: The high temp. for today was a very hot 50F. We went for a walk in the woods on very heavy, wet snow. The trail is very rough, and we broke through many times…Ugh…my aching back… The snowmobiles have yet to pass by our way. Go figure. The snow was perfect for snowmobiling for the last 5 days…not anymore…We passed through lots of hot pockets where...
Weather Warm-Up: Whoo…we’re having a heat wave! At 5:31 pm, the temperature is up to 31.8F. Time to get out the bathing suits! We are supposed to get freezing drizzle turning to rain overnight. UGH…Double UGH…that means that the lovely fluffy snow will turn icy, and be difficult to traverse in the woods. The early part of winter is the most difficult to deal with. We...
Snow Total Thus Far: 24” of snow.
Temperature: The daytime temp. got up to 20F today, with winds gusting to 20mph. Tonight, the temp. will fall to 1F. I am sooooo cooooold…… But, we went snowshoeing in the woods today, and that warmed me up so much I had to unzip my jacket and take off my hat! We thought about snowshoeing across the pond, but upon reflection realized it would be...
VIDEO: Blizzard Wind Patterns: With the wind changing directions and blowing snow every which way, many beautiful flowing snow patterns get whipped up. You can see whirling spirals, crazy eights, horizontal blasts, uplifts and downdrafts. It is rather mesmerizing to watch. We ended up getting about 13” from the storm. (Click on video, then pause it to let it pre-load before playing.)
Snow: At 4:38 pm, we have 4 inches of very fluffy snow.
Daytime Temperatures: Our low temp. this morning was 0.4F, and our high this afternoon is a whopping 10F at 4:45pm, with a windchill of -6F. Whoohoo! I just finished shovelling the front deck. The temp. is supposed to climb to a sweltering 18F by about 2am before it begins to drop again. The actual blizzard is supposed to occur from...
Winter Solstice: At 7:04 am the winter solstice began. This will bring us the longest night of the year with sunrise at 7:10 am, and sunset at 4:05 pm.
Snow Total Thus Far: 11” snow for the season, and winter has not yet begun!
Snow: We got 1” of additional snow overnight.
Birds: At 9:30 am, the temperature is 7.7F. The bird feeders are attracting lots of birds who are trying to keep warm. We’ve had the red-bellied woodpecker, the male and female downy woodpeckers, the male hairy woodpecker, a flock of slate gray juncos, 3 big...
Snow: At 9:45 pm we have 4” of very fluffy snow. The temperature is 7F, and with the wind chill factored in, we have a feel-like temperature of -9F. We should get at least another inch by morning.
Enjoy the Great Outdoors: I’ve been feeling a bit cranky lately, and decided it was from lack of sunshine. I leave for work in the dark of morning, and return home during twilight. Sunrise is at 7:11 am, and sunset is at 4:04 pm. So…yesterday, I decided to leave school at precisely 2:30 pm (our official leave time) in an attempt to soak up some sunshine before darkness fell....
Snow Total Thus Far: 6 inches
Snow: We got about 4 inches of light, powdery snow today, and our high temperature for the day was 21F.
Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus), Adult, Northern Male: This woodpecker (rare to Maine) was feasting on our suet feeder on-and-off all day long, in Bowdoin. This is quite exciting as I haven’t seen one of these woodpeckers since I lived in South Florida many moons ago. If I get lucky, maybe he’ll stay around for awhile so I can record his voice. Okay, I’ve just...
SCHOOL SNOW DAY # 1: 5:30 am - We have a mini-ice storm and received about 1/2” ice overnight. It is now 32F and raining. We are not planning on going outside at all today as it is treacherous. Although we have Yak Trax to put on our boots, Kasha just has rubber-soled booties that do not give her much traction. Oops…the power is flickering and we will probably lose power soon, as the...
Snow Total Thus Far This Winter: 2” snow.
More Snow: We got 1” of wet snow from small flurries all day long. The high temperature in our neck of the woods was 31.8F.
