Ducks upstairs…dog and human male downstairs: Kasha and Drew have retreated to the basement while I practice my duck calls along with my Audubon CD. It is amazing how many different sounds you can make by moving your hand around on the front of the duck call. Most of the time I sound like a raucous gull, but I am getting closer to sounding like a wounded wood duck. Mind you, I want to sound...
Calling All Ducks and Owls…: We went to LL Bean to buy a few necessities, and I became enamoured by all the wildlife callers. If you want it, Bean has it. So…I bought a barred owl call and a wood duck call (squealer). I’ve never had a duck call before, so of course, being me, I read the directions. Here is the first sentence, “Hold the call the same way you would hold a...

Within The Stone: I purchased a new book titled, Within The Stone, by Bill Atkinson. It is the most beautiful book I’ve ever owned. If you are into rocks and minerals, you will love this book. I find myself catching my breath when gazing upon the stunning photos of specimens of polished rocks. WOW! I get transported directly into the stone, into the patterns, into the colors…This book...
SLUSH PUPPY: Today set a new high temperature record with a temp. of 54.8F. When I walked outdoors after work I thought I was having a hot flash;-) It felt positively steamy! Upon arriving home, I went for a walk on the pond ice. The top several inches is slush, so I wore my snow boots and had a great time walking to the north end of the pond and back. I cannot think of a better way to spend the...
SNOWSHOEING: Choices, choices, choices…shoe shopping (my school shoes bit the dust on Friday) or showshoeing…eenie…meanie…miney…moe…Snowshoeing won out today. We went for a great trek through the woods this afternoon. We followed the snowmobile trail the entire way. We crossed Wagg Road which is really a dirt track in the woods. One interesting observation that...
SCHOOL SNOW DAY # 3: Whooppeeee….No School…No School…No School ;-)) Drew says I am worse than my students in my celebration…but I want to go snowshoeing again, photograph the gorgeous scenery, do a bit of shoveling, and grade more papers (I didn’t get as much school work done over vacation as I had planned). SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 48.5 inches SNOW: We got 9.5 inches of...
SNOWSHOEING: We went for a 1.5 mile trek through the fresh powder the storm layed down yesterday. There is still quite a bit of liquid water pooled over many places of our feeder trail, and some flowing water down the center of the main trail. The scenery was gorgeous with snow built up on horizontal limbs of trees, many of which are hanging low over the trail. We snowshoed next to a red pine...
