SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 39 inches. Last year we had a total of 3 inches of snow by December 31st. What a nice change for this year. AT THE RISK OF SOUNDING REPETITIVE…WE’VE GOT SNOW ;-) Yup…yet another snow storm came our way dumping an additional 8.5 inches of snow. Oh yes…we are now under a Winter Storm Watch for Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning, which means that we...

ICE FISHING: Two men just drilled holes for ice fishing. We will go out and measure the thickness of the ice after they leave. SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 30.5 inches SNOW: Yesterday, we got 1 inch of very wet snow followed by rain. It is supposed to begin snowing tonight into tomorrow afternoon. We are in the 4-8 inch range for snow accumulation.
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 29.5 inches. SNOW: We got 3 inches of wet, sticky snow overnight. POND ICE: The slush layer on the pond has completely frozen, and the ice is at least a solid 6 inches thick. The first ice skaters were seen on December 26.
Sap Dripping: The squirrels have been chewing on one of the branches of the maple tree outside our kitchen window, and I saw some sap dripping from the wound of the branch. With the daytime temps. above 32F this last week, the sap in the trees is rising a bit (just like it would in March for maple syrup time). Treacherous Trails: With the snow softening during the day, and below freezing temps....
SNOWSHOEING: We took a family snowshoe trek through the forest today and had an absolute blast. What a great aerobic workout! Whew, my quads are oh, so tired;-) I think snowshoeing and cross country skiing are my two favorite winter activities. The daytime temp got to 30F and was perfect for a hard workout. POND ICE THICKNESS: After our forest outing, we got the drill and a trowel from the shed,...
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 26.5 inches SNOW ENDED OVER NIGHT: We got 4 inches of snow from this storm. When the roads were clear, we went to Play It Again Sports to buy me some snowshoes. And, as soon as we got back home we headed for the woods for my first snowshoe experience. I Love It! I got to break some new trail (and was huffing and puffing) and my feet and ankles were in heaven with the...
Snowy Day: A day off from school meant a walk in the woods. Drew lead the way, tamping down the trail with his snowshoes. Kasha was in doggy heaven as she ran around like a puppy, just as excited this year as in every other when the snow flies. She enjoys playing in the snow more than any other activity. We finished our walk with a visit to the pond and were able to capture a photo of the snow...
SCHOOL SNOW DAY # 2: Most of the schools in the state are again shut down as a winter storm is in the works. This sure is a snowy January December. You know its been cold out when 20F feels balmy! I am hoping to do some outdoor photography today as the daytime temp. is supposed to get up to 26F, which is the warmest temp. we’ve had in a week. Oh gee…I forgot to mention that because of...
EVENING SKY: Sunset is a few minutes on either side of 4pm in December, and by the time I get home from school I have about 15 minutes to enjoy the sunshine, if I get home at an early enough hour. I often go to school in the dark and arrive home after dark. So…I decided to photograph Orion’s belt (and its nebula), as daytime photography is eluding me at the moment…
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 22.5 inches ANOTHER WINTER STORM: We have 6 more inches of snow. Drew put the festive Pepto Bismol pink foam panels up over the three sets of glass front doors on Dec. 14. This keeps condensation from forming on the glass and keeps cold air at bay. Unfortunately, our view of the front yard and pond is totally obstructed. We’ll keep the panels up until March when the...
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 16.5 inches COLD DAY: The temps. we have been experiencing in Maine are below normal and are downright cold! We are getting more snow this evening and have an additional 4 inches. DECEMBER TEMPERATURES: December temps. are quite a bit below normal. We should be averaging 34F during the day and 19F at night. Instead, we are averaging 28F during the day and 11F at night. These...
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 12.5 inches. MORE SNOW: 3 more inches of snow yesterday afternoon into the evening, turning to a wintry mix today.
SNOW TOTAL THUS FAR: 9.5 inches. JUST A TAD MORE SNOW: We got 1.5 inches of new snow this morning.
1ST SNOW STORM HAS BEGUN: The first snow plow of the season rolled on by at 5:15 am. Schools in the entire state of Maine are closed. You know the storm is serious because the local NBC news crew is wearing their stormy day sweaters. What a goofy, but loveable group of people. Three snow mobiles just went racing down the road at high speed. They’ve got the vehicle of choice on a day like...
STORM PREPARATION: Hmmm…let’s see…fill the bird feeder, put out a block of suet, gas up the snow thrower, put snow tires on the truck, chink the doors with foam strips, set out the shovels, put the meter stick next to the front door, get the camera ready, grocery shop for food staples like popcorn, hot cocoa, tea, and Ghirardelli Limited Edition Peppermint Bark chocolate. Bring...
MAINE WEATHER: We are currently experiencing a blast of arctic air. The wind is blowing with speeds between 16 mph to 25 mph, the temp. is 20F (-7C), and the windchill is 9F (-13C). The trees on the western edge of the pond are blocking the wind allowing the western half of the pond to remain ice-covered, while the rest of the pond, from the middle to the eastern shore, is ice-free with lots of...
