Springtime temps are here: Yowzer, the next four days are going to be warm. The daytime temps will all be 40F or above, with nighttime temps. in the 20s to mid 30s…
Weather Update: It was a dreary, cold, and damp day with the high temp. of 32 in the morning. The temperature stayed at around 30F most of the day, and is rapidly falling as I write this post at 8:50 pm. There is a cold wind blowing, and the sky is now clear with lots of stars sparkling in the darkness. The temp. is supposed to drop to 9F (with a wind chill of -5F) by 6am tomorrow. We are...
Snow on Pond: We have been noticing interesting patterns of when slush occurs or not…There is only about 1 inch of snow covering the pond ice (even after warm days this week; yesterday was 42F.) The snow on the pond was dry and absolutely perfect for walking on even after the sun had been beating down on it all day long. When there are many inches of snow, say a foot, a day like today would...
Turkey Trot: Drew happened upon a small flock of turkeys while out on a walk. Funny thing about turkeys, they have no fear of automobiles, but seeing a person on foot sends them running.
Weather: We had a bit of freezing drizzle today, and the expected high temp. did not occur. We barely got above 32F.
Snow: We got 2” of snow yesterday, and today’s high temp. should reach 41F (with a few rain showers thrown in for good measure.) I guess it’s still treadmill time as the forest is even worse for walking…I think we’ll go back to the beach again this weekend. Too bad it is almost an hour’s drive away…I am starting to wish we could afford to move closer to...

Snow and Rain: SNOW DAY # 2. We got 2” of snow followed by freezing rain and rain.UGH! Check out the weather map. All that rain is moving northward leaving us with a depressingly wet day with no way to play outdoors…Oh well, I have several days worth of papers to grade, so I’d better get working! I guess we’ll go to the beach again this weekend as the woods and pond are...
Aughhh…more rain on the way: And, wintry mix, and ice, and a bit of snow…UGH…
No auroras for us…
Photographing Auroras: Check out Patrick Endres’ Alaska Photography blog:
• Put your camera on a tripod.
• A high ISO is best, between 400 and 1600.
• The length of your exposure will depend on how large of an f/stop your camera lens has, try 5-30 seconds. Set your f/stop to its largest opening.
• Use a wide angle lens, manual focus, self timer release.
• TAKE OFF YOUR LENS FILTER,...
Aurora Alert: Well, we might have auroras tonight, and the sky should become mostly clear by 7pm! Go outside and check the northern sky periodically!
Message from Spaceweather.com: As predicted by analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, a CME hit Earth’s magnetic field on Jan. 24 at ~1500 UT (10 am EST). A geomagnetic storm is brewing in the aftermath of the impact, but as this ...
Walking on the pond: On Sunday, we had to abort our walk on the pond as the conditions were wretched. There was 9 inches of snow covering a thin crust, covering slush, covering ice. Each step was potentially jarring and my arthritic knee was none too happy when I took a major misstep. I had to go home and treadmill instead…but, at least I got outdoors and enjoyed the sunshine in lovely 21F...
The Rain in Maine falls mainly on the Haines: UGH…Rain overnight with temps. up to 39F. Fog will form overnight and the snow will be a mess…puddles, puddles everywhere.
Snow: We got 9” inches of snow overnight. Off to school we go! Luckily, this was an all snow event. The temps. are suppose to rise up to 40F by next Monday and Tuesday, at which time we are due for more rain. Why, oh why can’t we get to enjoy snow for more than a day at a time?
Snow: We got 3.25 inches of snow this morning. At 5pm, we are supposed to get freezing rain which will turn to rain overnight. It should be a slippery ride in to work tomorrow morning.
Weather Update: The temp. is warming again, and on Tuesday we are in for snow, followed by a mix of snow and rain, then freezing rain…icy…this is getting old…We can’t seem to get more than a few inches of snow on the ground at any one time.
New low temp. for the year: Well, the thermometer read -4.6F as our overnight low. Now, that means winter in my mind! Today’s high was 10F.
SNOW: We got 6 inches of snow today. Yipppeeee…..of course, it is supposed to rain tomorrow. This weather is nuts! We can’t get cold enough weather, for long enough, to get a good base of snow for playing in this year.
Popham Beach: We got a kick out of these gulls as we’ve never spent much time watching their antics. These two were carrying sticks and pieces of seaweed in their mouths, and even argued over who would get the largest piece. Why? Who knows…Silly gulls…
Weather Update: We got 1” of strange white stuff on the ground today. Wow, could it actually be snow? All this darned near freezing weather leaves us with slippery streets, and there were lots of cars off the road.
Weather Update: Ugh…the warm daytime temps. continue with no appreciable snow in our 10 day forecast. Daytime highs beginning Wednesday are: 23, 34, 29, 42, 37, 27, 32, 35, 34, 36. We are supposed to get rain on Jan. 12th. Unreal! This may be similar to our 2003/2004 winter where we only got 30 inches of snow. Gee…we already received 22” total for the season back in October and...
Weather: The roads were icy yesterday, and our winter weather pattern is becoming more like that of Iceland every day. In Iceland, the daytime highs hover a bit above freezing and their nighttime lows are right at or just below freezing. Iceland gets lots of wintry mix all winter long. And, that is the pattern we are in as we are due for rain showers again tonight.

Weather Update…AKA What A Difference A Day Makes: Our overnight high rose to a whopping 50F. WHAT? At 6:52 am, the outdoor temperature has dropped to 47.8F, and the temp will continue to drop all day. The snow is all but gone, on land and on the pond. We have opened up the house top to bottom to get some nice, fresh air inside. It smells like spring has sprung, albeit momentarily.
Tonight’s Weather: Oh, how the weather does change here. Our overnight low is supposed to be 36F. We are supposed to get periods of rain and wind, with gusts up to 20-30 mph. Rainfall will possibly be over one inch. I am sure glad I got out onto the pond ice this afternoon.
